[NFBWATlk] Not sure I like this idea...

It is an idea based in a desire to ensure all are safe in an emergency, but
history shows that such lists may be used in a negative way. Due to the
individuals who lost their lives because they use wheelchairs and were
unable to leave the disaster area, there is a call to create a "Disability
Database". A list of where individuals with disabilities live so that first
responders can ensure they are evacuated in times of disaster.

In my work with the Kitsap County Accessible Comunitiy Advisory Committee,
this idea has been brought up to the committee as a potential solution. I
spoke out against it saying that instead we need to rely on creating a more
cohesive neighborhood system where all individuals in a neighborhood know
each other and we can work together to ensure our neighbors are safe. the
Kitsap County Emergency Management Division is looking at attempting to
model the Bainbridge Prepares program of mapping a neighborhood so that you
know about the people who live around your area. Dave R. from the KCEM is
quick to say you can't rely on the government in times of disaster but
instead be prepared to rely on yourself and your community.

When I spoke up at the meeting against such a database I was met with
resistance. So I wonder, what do you think? Here is a link to the article:
