Hi Charlene,
I'm so bummed that Paula and I will not make it to Wheeling. On a very sad note, Paula's mom passed away Monday night. She has been battling cancer most of this year, and at 87 she put up a valiant battle, but it finally got her. Luckily, Paula was able to be with her much of the last month or so to provide comfort, and she did pass peacefully. We will be in Morgantown this weekend for the services. I hope the friends we were going to be hosting down here for the WvU-Marshall football game will be ok without us. Also, amidst all the chaos of the last month, I was unable to get a product to Sheri for the auction. I'm sorry about that, but I will try to get my act together better next year. I hope everyone has a wonderful convention, and please send everyone our love. Thanks.

President Smyth would like to thank all the members of the Sightless Workers' Guild
who have worked hard to handle convention arrangements. Please know, you helped
to make this year's convention possible.

HOTEL DESCRIPTION
(Special thanks goes out to Bob Hicks for taking the time to write this description.)
Orientation
Basic parameters:
1. The Ohio River runs north to south at Wheeling(please don't get your compass
out).
2. The number streets, such as 12th
Street, run perpendicular to the river.
3. The named streets run parallel to the river; these are Water Street (two way
traffic (nearest the river)), Main Street ((moving east towards the hotel) (one way
south)); Market Street (one way north); and Chapline Street (two way traffic). Eoff
Street is the next street east, but the only thing over that way is the Roman Catholic
Cathedral. There is a Presbyterian Church on Chapline between 13
th and 14th
Streets; there is a Methodist Church at the corner of 11
th
and Chaplin and, there are two Lutheran Churches about two buildings apart at the
corner of 16
th
& Chapline Streets.
A. The McLure House is at the corner of 12
th Street & Market Street.
B. The main entrance is on Market Street approximately 120 feet from the corner.
C. This door is recessed into the building about 6 feet, and there aren't any steps
down into the lobby at this entrance.
D. The front desk is approximately 60 feet from the door and through a small lobby
with sofas and chairs.
E. On either side of the front door(inside) are curving stairs up to the first
floor(there are seven floors of guest rooms.
F. There is a hallway to the immediate right inside the front door which goes
to an open sports equipment store inside the building.
G. Most of the way(40 feet) on the right side are two elevators with buttons in
the middle.
H. The registration desk for the NFB will be on the left opposite the elevators.
I. The lobby area is about 60 feet by 40 feet.
J. There are steps in the back left that lead to the parking garage. If you do
not wish to walk the two blocks to the nearest grassy area for a dog guide relief
area, you can find an out of the way place in the parking garage for your dog to
use. It is very important that you clean up after your dog guide.
K. There are restrooms on the left after exiting the elevator on the first floor.
The first restroom is for ladies, and the second restroom is for men. These are
directly across from the steps if you choose to take the steps up to the first level.
There aren't any restrooms on the lobby level.
L. All meetings will be on the first floor. The convention sessions will take
place in the Colonnade Room. To get to the Colonnade Room, exit the elevator and
walk forward until you get to the end of the hall. The Colonnade Room is the last
door on the right. Please keep in mind that there are steps leading down a little
bit ahead of you and to your right after you exit the elevator. The reception, auction,
banquet, and dance will take place in the Statler Room. The Statler Room is on the
first level. To get to the Statler Room, turn right after exiting the elevator.
M. The floor plan is similar on all the guest floors. When you get off the elevator,
there are three hall ways leading away from the elevator. The first hallway is off
to the left, the second hallway is almost straight ahead, and the third hallway is
off to the right.
N. There is an elevator in the parking garage.
O. The entrance to the parking garage is around the corner on Chapline Street.
P. About a fourth of the way back on the left are steps up to the side door that
brings you out onto 12
th
street(5 or 6 steps with railings on both sides). This side door is approximately
55 feet from the corner of 12
th Street and Market.
Facing the front of the McLure House, there is a chain link fence to the immediate
right. If you find the chain link fence, come back to the left about 25 feet to
the main entrance. If you go beyond the chain link fence, you will find the Victoria
Theater which has shows Friday and Saturday nights. Just past the Victoria is a
curb, this is 13
th
Street, which is really an alley. To the left of the front door is an office for
the Italian Festival which will probably be closed.
On the corner of 12th
and Chapline is the Metropolitan Restaurant, open for lunch and dinner. Nice, but
pricey.
DiCarlo's Pizza is on the west side of Main Street at the corner of 13
th
and Main. They do deliver. The telephone number is 304-233-0730.
Eleventh Street is a short street which staggers north and then south again so that
it is in three short sections. There is a Subway on the west side of Market Street
at the corner of 11
th
and Market streets. Across from the Subway is a plaza with fountains and seats.
On the East side of Market, there is a Quiznos about half way between 12
th
and 11
th
Streets. There is also a CVS Pharmacy on the east side in the middle of the block.
The Heritage Port Amphitheater is at the end of 12
th
Street at the Ohio River. This is the only grassy area anywhere near the hotel.
It is clearly marked no dogs, but I feel sure that service animals are an exception
which will be tolerated as long as we clean up after our partners. There is also
a walking path along the river that runs from 48
th
Street on the southern end up to Pike Island Dam at the northern end, about 9 miles
long.
I believe there are several bars in the downtown area. I would not recommend any
of them outside the hotel. There are some smaller cafes and such, but I do not have
any personal
Knowledge of them.
There is a 7-11 at the corner of 14th
and Market Street (southeast corner of the intersection).
Traveling east on I70, take the Main Street exit. Go south on Main to 12
th
Street (United Bank is on the corner). Turn left on 12
th
Street and move to the right hand lane. The McLure House is one block ahead on
the right.
Traveling from the south on Route 2, take the 18
th
Street exit. This puts you on Eoff Street where you can go straight until 12
th
Street and then turn left. The McLure House is two blocks ahead on the left. Be
careful as 12
th
Street is two way in some places and one way from Main to Chapline.
Traveling west on I70, take exit 2 by Kroger's and Perkins. At the light by Perkins,
turn left and follow Route 40 west. You will go up Wheeling Hill. At the top, bare
left at the bronze Indian and go down Chapline Street. The first light you come
to at the bottom of the hill is 11
th
Street. One block ahead just past the Federal Buildings will be the light at 12
th
Street. Just ahead on the right past the Metropolitan Restaurant is the entrance
to the parking garage for the McLure House.
This year's hotel guest room rates are $79 per night for up to four persons
per room. Check in time at the McLure House begins at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September
9, 2010. Check out time has been extended to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 12,
2010.
The hotel's restaurant is closed, but we have made arrangements for a catering
service. For a flat fee of $20.00 per person, breakfast of assorted muffins, fruit,
coffee, and a potato, cheese, and sausage casserole will be provided Friday morning
from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday mornings from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30
p.m. in the hotel's restaurant. Lunch on Saturday will be provided from noon until
1:30 p.m. in the hotel's restaurant and will consist of a ham and cheese croissant,
a turkey and cheese croissant, a salad, and iced tea.

1:30 - 2:30 PM: DEALING WITH DTB DOWNLOADS--Brad Hodges, Presidential Suite 502:
Options and Opportunities to build chapter programs. Online access to the entire
digital Talking Book collection presents chapters and individuals with exciting opportunities
which we have only scarcely dreamed possible. It also means that for many members
assistance in downloading materials is required. Following a successful Digital
Talking Book seminar, conducted last spring, the Huntington Area Chapter has launched
a weekly Digital Download Day, at the Huntington Starbucks. Brad Hodges will review
the content of the seminar and discuss the ins and outs of organizing your chapters
own download assistance effort. There will also be time for general questions and
answers about the NLS program and other developments in downloadable material.
