Joanne Wilson, Executive Director of Affiliate Action, sent this message along with
the request that it be forwarded on to all of you:
Ed Morman, Director of the Jacobus tenBroek Library, has asked me to send
you the following message:
Dear affiliate presidents,
MaryBeth Wise, a network consultant at the National Library Service for the Blind
and Physically Handicapped, has begun work on an oral history project about the NLS.
The purpose of this project is to create a historical record of the personal stories,
challenges, and triumphs experienced in the development of the Braille and Talking
Books programs. Ms. Wise is particularly interested in the transition to digital
technology and wishes to interview a sampling of stakeholders in the work of the
NLS-including NLS staff, narrators, and, of course, patrons of the service.
In order to speak with as many NLS patrons as possible in a short period of time.
Ms. Wise is planning to join us in Orlando, where she hopes to interview a cross-section
of Federationists who use NLS services. Ms. Wise has already interviewed Marc and
Patricia Maurer, both of whom enthusiastically support her efforts.
I am writing to you today to ask you to identify NLS patrons in your affiliate who
might be interested in being interviewed. Ms. Wise would like to speak with long-time
patrons who accessed audio books on disc, cassette, and digital formats, as well
as younger patrons who began accessing NLS services more recently. She is also interested
in individuals with varying levels of experience with computers and technology-from
those who do not have internet access and do not use computers at all, to individuals
who use many technologies to access information. The interviews will be one-on-one
and will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
Individuals interested in scheduling an oral history interview should contact MaryBeth
Wise at 301-651-6861 or by email at >
mbwise1 at verizon.net<mailto:mbwise1 at verizon.net
>. Interviews will be scheduled throughout the convention at any time other than
when general sessions are happening. The room is not yet set, but it will be in
a convenient place in the convention hotel.
Thank you for your cooperation.
