Petition circulating to save WVSDB MARLA PISCIOTTA Review Staff ROMNEY A
petition entitled Keep West Virginia Deaf and Blind School in Romney, WV
can be found in many businesses around Romney. The petition states that
the
West Virginia Deaf and Blind School needs to stay in Romney, WV. Moving
the
school would affect our community (and surrounding communities)
negatively.
The author of the petition is Diana Griffith of Romney, who is a
long-term
substitute childcare worker at the WVSDB. I started the petition because
we
had received a letter at the schools. The board was asking for
information
and talking about moving the schools, said Griffith. I felt I should
start
a petition right away to try and keep the schools here. Griffith said
since
the letter she has heard the schools aren't moving. I don't know how
they
know that. The board hasn't met yet to decide, said Griffith. The state
board of education meeting is scheduled for Feb. 13. Griffith said she
would be collecting the petitions and sending them to the state board of
education. I hope they help keep the schools here. I feel proud when I
say
I work in Romney, the home of the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and
the Blind, said Griffith. There is also a Facebook site entitled Save
the
West Virginia Deaf and Blind School. Comments on Facebook include the
following; Many members of our community rely on employment from WVDBS.
The
town and county are deaf and blind friendly and have been since the
schools
opening over 140 year ago. Keeping the WVSDB in Romney is good for
everyone, the children who attend, the employees, and the community.
Remember, "It takes a village to raise a child" We are a great village,
helpful to our community. Look at the money that was raised last week by
this "village" to help others. Keep WVSDB here in this wonderful
community!! And What can we do to ensure the State of WV does not move
the
D&B School? This would be horrible for Romney! What would become of the
kids, the historic buildings and all of the people who work there? I
think
this is a BAD MOVE on the part of the State of WV! Another comment said,
Recruit more deaf kids. The number of students is the issue. The number
of
names on the petitions thus far could not be obtained..
