Good afternoon Keri and everyone,

You still have six months to plan to attend the national convention in
addition to your other plans this summer and raise the needed funds to add
this to your summer adventures. There are folks in the NFBWV Affiliate who
can help you cut corners so you can be with us in Orlando this year.

It would do the "I can't afford it" gang well to begin reaching out to
those who attended conventions and other events along with other life
activities some on very short notice to master the tricks of doing so. Yours
truly is one such person that did it in 1984.

I had no plans to attend the national convention that year. During our
June 1984 meeting I was asked if I wanted to go to Phoenix for the
convention. I didn't have any funds saved up. With encouragement from other
chapter members by that following Monday I had bought a plane ticket. With
help from the Texas Affiliate, the Austin Chapter and funds I was able to
rustle up on my own I attended what would be for me a very faitful
convention. It was at that convention that I met my wife Mary. We were
Married in March of 1985and in March will have been together for 28
wonderful years. I shutter to think where I would be had I said that I
couldn't afford to attend the convention or that I had other plans that
would rule out that possibility.

Our resolve to attend the NFB convention was tested a second time in 1989
when we moved from Austin to San Antonio so Mary could be gin work at the
Education Service Center Region 20 as a Braille Proofreader. While she would
not be able to go to Denver I still attended. In fact people were very
surprised that despite our having moved in early June were able to get one
of us to that year's national convention.

We almost missed the 2008 convention due to Mary's having to have
surgery three days before we were leave for Dallas. She was discharged from
the Hospital on a Saturday morning. That evening we flew to Dallas for that
year's national convention defying all of the nay sayers leaving them to eat
crow! Although she stayed on the bus for the event Mary participated in that
year's March for Independence.

Statements like "I can't afford it" or " Good for you", or "That's
wonderful you were able to go but..." There are too many examples of
individuals in this organization that despite severe financial and other
issues found ways to attend the national convention and other federation
events even in the midst of other plans and activities. Let me urge you to
reach out to these individuals, learn their secrets, see what assistance you
can get from the NFBWV, and we'll look forward to seeing you in Orlando this
summer.
