Weekly Note 5/10/16

Dear WVSDB Community;

  * We are anxiously looking forward to hosting our first ever Family-School Association Day event this Saturday, May 14th, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., on our campus. Many fun and special activities are being planned for families, including Matthew Morgan and his magic show, Nancy Rourke, who will showcase her art skills, and a musical band. With special thanks to Orbital ATK, 2 rocket launches will be performed specifically for blind and Deaf children. Attached you will find the tentative schedule for the FSA Day event. Food and drinks will be sold by the Senior class. Several vendors will be at this event, as well.
  * Both Matthew Morgan and Nancy Rourke are nationally renowned for their extraordinary talents. They will be working with our Deaf and blind students this week in the classrooms as artists-in-residence. We are truly honored to have both of them sharing their expertise and skills with our students.
  * Due to the impending rain forecast for Saturday morning, we have decided to postpone the WVSDB 1870 Campus Classic 5K Walk/Run to October 1st, which will be our Homecoming Day. Participants who have already paid will have the option to get a full refund or receive a T-shirt and a rain check to race in October. Please contact Erin Riggleman of your choice at eeriggleman at k12.wv.us<mailto:eeriggleman at k12.wv.us>.
  * Our 2016 Prom, which is being organized by the school for the blind staff, will be held this Saturday night in the Multipurpose Room, 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. The Multi-Sensory Program’s 1st annual Night of the Stars Dance was held last week and I want to thank Susan Swenson and Nathan Smith, who helped organize this event.
  * Kudos to Kristian Haines, Art teacher, for putting on a magnificent Art show last Friday. Our students created some wonderful artwork. I believe a few of them will go on to have a career in art and graphic design!
  * We want to thank the Bank of Romney and President Lawrence Foley for their generous gift of cakes for our faculty, which they donated last Tuesday in recognition and celebration of the Teachers’ Appreciation Week.
  * We are very pleased to offer our first annual Family ASL Immersion Camp on July 24-29, 2016. The camp is designed for interested families who want to improve their ASL skills communicating with their Deaf children. The camp will be led by sisters Ruby Losh and Mary Ennis, who are both proud alumni. Both Ruby and Mary have extensive experience teaching ASL. Register early to reserve your space! Parents can register by using this link- http://wvsdb2.state.k12.wv.us/files/_QDHn6_/f6391808942dc0383745a49013852ec4/WVSDB_Family_ASL_Immersion_Camp-_July_24-29_2016.pdf<http://k12.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=927e93d9d516e8d7f9cedaa5f&id=28248b9e43&e=fc3fb553b0>

  * WVSDB Town Hall meeting notice: Several FSA members, including FSA Coordinator, Priscilla Epperly, and I will be meeting with interested participants at the Town Hall event, hosted by WVCDHH, this Friday May 13th at the Spring Mills High School Auditorium in Martinsburg.
  * There is a new groundbreaking social change campaign, sponsored by Perkins School for the Blind, called BlindNewWorld, which kicked off last week. The goal of the campaign is to demystify blindness and advocate greater inclusion of people who are blind or visually impaired in society. WVSDB has signed onto this movement and is a proud supporter of this important campaign. To learn more and join the movement, please visit BlindNewWorld at http://blindnewworld.org<http://k12.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=927e93d9d516e8d7f9cedaa5f&id=77a8b29ad7&e=fc3fb553b0> and follow @BlindNewWorld on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  * Reminder: The last day of school will be Friday, June 10th. Graduation is still scheduled for Friday, June 3rd at 10:00 am in the Multipurpose Room. This year’s commencement speaker will be Matthew Moore of Rochester, New York. He is the proud founder and publisher of Deaf Life magazine and is a long-time strong advocate of Deaf people’s civil rights.
I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at this Saturday’s FSA Day event!
