Greetings,

The officers and the board of directors of the National Federation of the Blind of West Virginia will be participating in a White Cane Safety Day event being conducted by Matt Stewart, O and M instructor at the West Virginia School for the Blind. You can read more about it in the announcement below. I would like to encourage as many of you as possible to attend so we can support the WVSB students and be good adult blind role models for them as well as help to carry out the mission of the National Federation of the Blind through participating in this walk. We do not have plans to participate in the Clay Center activities portion of the day. Matt is trying to get a count as to how many people will be participating in this walk. Please let me know as soon as possible if you plan on participating so I can let Matt know.

Matt has sent an email to all Special Education Directors in WV and various state leaders. Matt and WVSB hopes that as many as possible are able to join them, blind and low vision students from across the state, West Virginia School for the Blind Alumni, and various Blindness Organizations in WV. The white cane march will go from the south steps-east down Kanawha Blvd to Michigan Ave. Then North down Michigan Ave to Washington St E. Then head west down Washington St E to Greenbrier St. Go south down Greenbrier St to Kanawha Blvd. Finally go east back to the south step of the Capitol Building.

SAVE THE DATE!!!!

White Canes on the Boulevard

White Cane Safety Day is celebrated annually on the 15th of October.
Since 1964, White Cane Safety Day has been a national observance in the United States. This day has been set aside to celebrate all of the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and the important symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane.

With this in mind we would like your support to bring together all the blind and visually impaired students in WV. The celebration will be conducted in Charleston at the state capital on October 13, 2016 and will be supported by the West Virginia School for the Blind.

Your students will have the opportunity to meet other students like themselves, gain information about state and national blindness organizations, and meet blind and low vision professionals. We are also using this time to visit the Clay Center in Charleston. This enables our students to get very valuable exposure to the expanded core curriculum and also science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

We are asking that you release your students to participate in this great experience during this calendar day. The students' home county would be responsible for their transportation to and from Charleston. We currently have a tentative schedule of:

* 9 AM-12 PM: Listen to various presenters and walk on the Kanawha Blvd,

* 12:30PM-1:00 PM: Eat packed lunch at Clay Center, experience the Clay Center,

*         5:00 PM: Depart

(The final agenda will be created and available at the beginning of 2016-17 school term.)

If you are going to release your students to attend and participate in this wonderful opportunity, please contact Matthew Stewart at 304 822 4801 or at mestewart.k12.wv.us. This will allow WVSB to coordinate the logistics of the event.
