Winoma Marguerite Spurgeon
Winoma Marguerite Spurgeon, 87, of Hurricane and formerly of Parkersburg, went home
to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Broadmore Senior Living facility.
She graduated from Glenville State College and received her Master's in Music Education
at Marshall University. She was a retired band director and music teacher, having
taught 35 years at various schools including Tygarts Valley High School, Pickens,
Coalton, Parkersburg Catholic School, Romney School for the Blind, and several others
as well as taught many private violin and piano lessons. Winoma was a lifetime member
of the American Association of Woman Band Directors. She was a member of the Pleasant
Valley Church of the Brethren and served in Germany and Austria as a volunteer with
the church during the 1950's. While in Parkersburg, she attended church at the Salvation
Army where she played trumpet and piano for services.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oral and Stacy (Burton) Spurgeon of Bear
Fork and her husband, Hobert Prunty. She is survived by her brother, Robert Spurgeon
and his wife, Eileen; nephews, Randy Spurgeon and his wife, Debbie; Daniel Spurgeon
and his wife, Tammy; niece, Teresa Harrison and her husband, Larry; great nephews
and nieces, Joseph, David, Joshua, and Luke Spurgeon, and Jonathan, Sarah, and Amy
Harrison; also 12 great-great nieces and nephews.
Her whole life was devoted to the church and to teaching music. She provided instruments
for any child who needed one and loved passing the joy of music on to everyone she
met. She was very much loved and will be sadly missed by so many. Thanks for the
music, Winoma.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Leavitt
Funeral Home in Parkersburg, WV with Rev. Randy Spurgeon officiating. Interment will
follow at the Spurgeon Cemetery on Bear Fork. Visitation will be on Friday from noon
to 2:00 p.m. before the service.
