Weekly Note 10/10/17

Dear WVSDB Community;

Our recent Homecoming weekend was quite memorable with about 80 people in attendance for the WVSD Athletic Hall of Fame banquet on Saturday night. Congratulations to the new 7 inductees into the Hall of Fame.

Kudos to the September Residential Students of the Month: Heather Taylor (WVSD) and Elijah McClaskey (MSS).

The Career Academy for Postgraduates (CAP) program has organized a service learning project, Socktober, to support our local county. The CAP students will collect donations of various items, and they will be given to the Children's Home Society of West Virginia. For further information, please contact Rachel Rajca at rachel.rajca at k12.wv.us / 304-822-4806.

We are geared up to host our biennial statewide Fall Conference, "Beyond All Limits", starting tomorrow night through Friday. Some of the topics at our conference will address such things as Early Intervention, K-12 Education, Assistive Technology, ASL, and the needs of children with multi-sensory challenges. Each session will provide practical strategies and aids to enhance the instruction and care of children and students. Early intervention specialists, teachers, related service personnel, and residential staff will find sessions that will pique their interest and fuel their passion for professional growth. We are honored to have Lonnie Bedwell as our keynote speaker, who is known as an extreme sports athlete and is also blind. He was the National Geographic 2015 Adventurer of the Year. A former Navy Petty Officer, Lonnie lost his vision in 1997 during a hunting accident. He has kayaked challenging whitewater rapids, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, and is an avid downhill skier. His mission is to motivate and inspire others to embrace life with confidence and courage. He is an advocate for the blind and veterans and has been featured In many publications and television programs. In addition, one of our Board of Advisor members, Barbara Raimondo, who is the current Executive Director of CEASD, will be making several presentations at the conference.

Lastly, it is Book Fair week, located in the CTE hallway. A Family Night Book Fair event will be held on Thursday, 3:30 - 6:15 pm. You can shop online at scholastic.com/fair or use the Book Fair app or Google Play on your cellphone. Locate WVSDB Book Fair at zip code 26757. Thank you in advance for helping to promote literacy at WVSDB.
