Hey Deborah,

With the 2024 Paris Games around the corner, I wanted to share an inspiring story of personal triumph that has deeply moved my wife, Gena, and me.

Kayla Harrison is today a 34-year-old MMA professional mixed martial artist (MMA), multiple gold medalist and world champion judoka — an expert in judo.

During the 2012 London games, Kayla, then 22, had four fights in five hours. She won the first three bouts by ippon, the judo equivalent of boxing’s knockout.

As a result, she won America’s first-ever gold medal in judo!

But as impressive as Kayla’s Gold Medals and subsequent MMA career have been, it was the personal journey she made that Gena and I have never forgotten and continues to be a model and motivator for millions.

She achieved her dreams after overcoming a number of personal challenges — most devastating of all: abuse at the hands of her childhood coach.

Instead of being crushed by the situation, Kayla developed a champion's attitude. And used her struggles as fuel to pursue — and achieve — her dreams. Here are some key lessons from her story:

Turn Adversity into Strength: Kayla didn't let bad times or traumatic events stop her. Instead, she used them as a catalyst for growth and victory.

She showed us that our past defeats can ignite the fire for our present triumphs. In her own words, Kayla’s journey proves that “nothing can stop you.”

Find a Supportive Team: Recognizing the importance of a strong support system, Kayla and her mother sought reputable and safe coaches.

They found Jimmy Pedro Jr. and his father, who rebuilt her confidence and trained her to be a champion.

Kayla credits her success to the Pedros and her teammates, who motivated her every step of the way.

That’s why I’ve always believed we all need a team of people around us who support, love and encourage us in a host of ways: mentally, physically, spiritually, etc.

The acrostic for T.E.A.M. is so true: “Together everyone achieves more.”

Celebrate Progress: Achieving dreams is a process that rarely happens overnight. Kayla emphasized the importance of small steps and celebrating minor victories.

Her climb to becoming a multiple gold-medal winner involved countless moments of support and hard work from her team and herself, one step at a time.

Visualize Success: To this day, Kayla will say that visualizing victory is key to her success in life and in the ring.

She shared, “We practice a lot of visualization, and every night before I go to sleep, I would walk through my day and I would picture my journey in the Games and I would picture every moment of it. So, to have it happen, to have that clock tick down, to have it say, ‘Kayla Harrison, winner,’ was amazing.”

I can really relate to Kayla on this. I’ve used visualization a million times throughout my life. And so can you. It’s three easy steps:

1. Decide what you want
2. Picture the scene
3. Imagine each step toward your successful conclusion

Share Your Story: Realizing that many athletes faced similar struggles, Kayla began sharing her story to help others confront their fears and achieve their goals. She aims to be a source of support and inspiration, just as the Pedros and her fellow teammates were for her.

Persevere: Kayla’s message is clear: "Never give up on your dreams." Despite her challenges, she is now living her dream life, which includes being the mother of two beautiful children. Her story shows that with perseverance, anyone can achieve their dreams.

Kayla’s story of success can inspire all of us. No matter what our situation, no matter what we’ve been through — as long as we keep on trying and keep on working, we can reach our goals.

Deborah, I hope you enjoyed and were empowered by Kayla’s “champion attitude.” We were, and still are! I hope you also enjoy the 2024 Paris Games!

And don’t forget to watch the judo championships that run the entire week from Sat, Jul 27, 2024 – Sat, Aug 3, 2024!

Best,
