It’s hard to believe the tragic events of 9/11 occurred 23 years ago today.<br>
<br>
For most of us who lived through it, life stopped on that day.<br>
<br>
It was a new generation’s attack on Pearl Harbor.<br>
<br>
The September 11, 2001, attacks were the deadliest terrorist attacks in human history — causing the deaths of 2,977, including 343 firefighters.<br>
<br>
Our cry in the post-9/11 world was that we would <strong>“Never Forget.”</strong><br>
<br>
But have we?<br>
<br>
Most teens and even young adults today know little about those loaded commercial planes crashing into New York’s Twin Towers, Washington’s Pentagon, and on Pennsylvania soil.<br>
<br>
And to be honest, I’m concerned for the younger generations that aren’t learning enough about 9/11… how it occurred… and how future 9/11s can be prevented.<br>
<br>
Because 9/11 changed most of us in a significant way. We all learned lessons that day — lessons we should always remember — and the effects are still felt to this day.<br>
<br>
That change and growth were well explained by then mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, who was asked to share a few thoughts at the funeral of a police officer who perished in the two-hour time it took for the World Trade Center to collapse:<br>
<br>
<em>“When everybody was fleeing that building, and the cops and the firefighters and the EMS people were heading up into it, do you think any of them said, 'I wonder how many blacks are up there for us to save? I wonder what percentage are whites up here? How many Jews are there? Let's see — are these people making $400,000 a year, or $24,000, or? —<br>
<br>
"No, when you're saving lives, they're all precious. And that's how we're supposed to live all the time. How would you want the cops to treat you if you were on the seventy-fifth floor that day? Would you want them to say, 'Excuse me, but I've got to get the bosses out first'? Not exactly.<br>
<br>
"I confess I haven't always lived this way. But I'm convinced that God wants us to do it. He wants us to value every human life the way He does."</em><span style="font-size:10px;"> </span><br>
<br>
On the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I think it’s important we remember Mayor Guiliani’s words.<br>
<br>
Because no matter our differences, at the end of the day, we’re all Americans — Americans who should value and respect one another regardless of race, social status, or income.<br>
<br>
Like many of you, my wife Gena and I pray every day that nothing as tragic as 9/11 will ever happen again.<br>
<br>
But only if we are prepared and stay alert, and our country seeks God in genuine prayer, will we prevail and possibly prevent another such tragedy.<br>
<br>
We must replace fear with faith and continue to march forward with courage!<br>
<br>
So, please join us and the rest of the nation today on 9/11, commemorate the fallen, and pledge again that “We will never forget!”</p>
