<html class="apple-mail-supports-explicit-dark-mode"><head><meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"></head><body dir="auto"><div>Here\u2019s what I found out about the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) mission / purpose, and then I\u2019ll suggest a few options for a mission statement for the New Hampshire chapter.</div><div>\ufffc What I discovered: NFB\u2019s mission & philosophy \u2022 The National Federation of the Blind states its mission as: \u201cWe work tirelessly to improve the lives of blind people by fostering personal empowerment, coordinating nationwide advocacy, and building a greater understanding of blindness.\u201d \ufffc \u2022 Also, from NFB\u2019s foundational \u201cWhat is the NFB\u201d and state affiliate descriptions: the purpose includes helping blind people achieve self-confidence, self-respect, and self-determination ; and the ultimate goal of complete integration of the blind into society on a basis of equality . \ufffc \u2022 A very central theme is \u201cWe are changing what it means to be blind.\u201d That phrase is used by many affiliates, and is treated as the unchanging mission since NFB\u2019s founding. \ufffc \u2022 NFB emphasizes removing legal, economic, and societal barriers; educating the public; promoting equal opportunity in employment, education, recreation, etc. \ufffc So in summary: the national mission focuses on empowerment, equality, advocacy, education (both for blind individuals and for society), and integrating / enabling full participation. \ufffc Suggestions: Mission Statement for the New Hampshire Chapter Here are some mission-statement ideas: simple, positive, powerful, aligned with the national mission but localized to NH.
