But she took the high road and decided that as long as she has diabetes, she'd fight hard to help look for a cure. She's a good kid." Hannah Anolik, 13, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 6, attends Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Clifton. GARY ANOLIK, HANNAH'S FATHER A 13-year-old North Jersey girl is heading to Washington, D.C., with a personal message for lawmakers: Fund more diabetes research so future kids won't have to endure what she has. Hannah Anolik will testify before Congress as part of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Children's Congress and push her request. During the three-day trip, funded by the JDRF, she also will meet with New Jersey senators and congressional leaders to urge them to aid diabetes research. Hannah, who lives in Clifton, was recently selected as one of 150 representatives out of 1,500 applicants from across the nation for the honor, said Doug Rouse, executive director for the Northern New Jersey Rockland County Chapter of the JDRF. The Woodrow Wilson Middle School student has become a vocal advocate for diabetes research ever since she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2004, Rouse said. He added that besides raising awareness for the cause, Hannah has helped raise more than $25,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation through local fund-raisers with Nick Jonas in and the Walk for the Cure in New Jersey with her team, named Hannah's Bananas. "Hannah has done a lot. When we've had families with newly diagnosed kids, she speaks to the kids to let them know what it's going to be like," Rouse said. "She spoke at our gala, she spoke at kickoff events for the walk." Hannah's father, Gary Anolik, said he's very proud of his daughter. "I wish she didn't have to do all this," he said. "But she took the high road and decided that as long as she has diabetes, she'd fight hard to help look for a cure. She's a good kid." Her mother, Ellen, added, "She's such a spunky, amazing kid." Last year, Hannah was named a Kohl's Kid by Kohl's Department Store for her activism in the cause last year. The designation earned her a $1,000 scholarship. The Anoliks discovered their daughter was sick when she was just 6 years old. "It was mother's intuition. I knew something was wrong with her," recalled Ellen. "I took her to the doctor, and her blood sugar was almost 700." Hannah's pancreas shut down and she was in the intensive care unit for a week. After that, her life changed dramatically: She needed insulin shots after everything she ate — up to five a day — and learned how to administer them on her own. Now she wears an insulin pump at all times. But in most other ways, Hannah's a typical pre-teen, her mother said: She goes out with her friends, plays sports, baby-sits and "never lets anything get to her," even in the stressful weeks before her bat mitzvah, which takes place this coming weekend, Ellen said. When she was 7, Hannah was asked to speak at the JDRF gala and told some 600 people about her struggles and what her life was like with diabetes. "To me, that's something I would never do," Ellen said. "But she did it with such poise. Honestly, there wasn't a dry eye in the house. "She told the crowd she thinks she was given diabetes for a reason: to spare someone else. I was really moved by that." E-mail: yellin@northjersey.com "I wish she didn't have to do all this.
