National Federation of the Blind of New Jersey
Celebrates Release of Braille Commemorative Silver Dollar
Cherry Hill, New Jersey The Garden State Chapter of the National Federation
of the Blind of New Jersey (NFBNJ) will celebrate the newly-minted Louis
Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar, Sunday, April 26, from 11:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m. at Barnes & Noble in Cherry Hill, NJ. The chapter will set up
information tables at Barnes & Noble, staffed with volunteers to help inform
and educate the public about Braille literacy and give out literature.
The Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar commemorates the life and work
of the inventor of the reading code for the blind, Louis Braille, and its
introduction has been commemorated by proclamations signed by Governor Jon
Corzine, Senator Frank Lautenberg, and Congressman Donald Payne.
Sales of the Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar, which was authorized
by a law passed by Congress, will support the NFB's "Braille Readers are
Leaders" campaign. The campaign is a national initiative created to double
the number of blind children learning Braille by 2015.
The coin is offered in proof and uncirculated versions and the price will
vary accordingly. The Braille silver dollar is the first coin to ever
feature tactile, readable Braille. In addition, NASA announced that the new
commemorative coin will fly on a future space shuttle mission
"It's a proud moment for all of us who are blind," said Linda DeBerardinis,
treasurer of the Garden State Chapter of the National Federation of the
Blind of New Jersey. "Of course it's a tribute to the efforts of Louis
Braille to bring independence to the blind but it also acknowledges our
presence to the public. We have worked hard for passage of this coin. It
doesn't simply symbolize Braille, it actually features tactile Braille.
This raises our profile nationwide, and tells the public that blind people
are working, living, and contributing in our country."
The importance of the coin goes well beyond its economic value. DeBerardinis
explained: "Braille literacy is critical to our education and independence.
And only about 10 percent of blind and visually impaired people actually
know how to read Braille."
Dr. Marc Maurer, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said:
"If the blind can read, the blind can achieve. So this is a coin with a
mission: to make sure that every blind child and adult in our nation has the
opportunity to learn Braille."
The coin itself will only be offered by the US Mint until December 31, 2009.
After that date all remaining coins will be melted down to make new coins.
You can buy a Louis Braille Bicentennial Dollar now at www.usmint.gov or by
calling 800-USA-MINT (872-6468). For more information about the release
event, please contact Linda DeBerardinis at (856) 764-7014.
