<DIV>Hey Marion and NAGDU members</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Great information and thank you for sharing Trisha. I recently
encountered just that type of situation when I joined the AtlantiCare Life
Center in Egg Harbor Township, NJ At this exercise facility - there has
never been a guide dog team participating in working out, using the equipment,
taking classes and walking the track. There have been a few blind people,
but I have been told they are all guided by a family member.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>After attending an exercise class, I was approached by a personal
trainer/exercise instructor and informed that 3 people complained at the main
desk about me having my guide dog with me. I never noted anyone
within that class demonstrating any problems of breathing, making any types of
distressful moves - I would recognize since I was an EMT in the past.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The instructor/personal trainer that approached me said I should not be
prevented from attending classes nor should those with allergies not have the
right to attend either and experience an attack. She was fully supportive
of me and Dorito - said we should be able to travel anywhere within this gym -
even the pool area.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>What was advised and cleared with the management of the facility was
between each exercise classroom was a utility closet. Dorito, my guide
dog, relaxes in that area with the door open and she lies on a 100% Egyptian
Cotton beach towel. Dorito can view me and I am very close to where
she is. To further guarantee that Dorito does not further aggravate
anyone, I use waterless shampoo in the locker room - wet her up good, brush her
extensively and use a very fine comb to get whatever loose hair or dander
present. This all done on our on personal towel and any hair off brushes
or comb I place in a baggy and bring home to dispose.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I have been doing this for over 3 months now. No one has any
complaints with Dorito and I in the locker room grooming. Walking the
track, using any cardio equipment, treadmills or bikes. And no one
complains or has had an allergy attack or complained to the front desk.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Also this was also a subject that was discussed on an open teleconference
call sponsored by the Guide Dog Foundation. It covered allergies and guide
dogs when seeking employment. If anyone wants to learn about the open
teleconference calls that GDF sponsors and are not a graduate, please do
not hesitate to contact me. The next call in July 9, 2013.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Thanks for your great information.</DIV>
