Many guide dog handlers prefer to relieve their dogs on concrete to aid in clean up and monitoring of the dog’s health. There are some dogs, however, that will only relieve on a natural surface. Therefore, the designated relief area should include both natural and concrete surfaces. Therefore, special attention should be given to the safety of convention participants when selecting the relief area location. The path to the area and the area itself should be well lit; located in a non-isolated spot; and easily accessible to the hotel doorway. Add to that the dog's stress at the convention, the changes in relief schedules, the reluctance to empty in a shared area, and it becomes even more difficult to predict when the dog will empty. Assistance from sighted volunteers will help to ensure that the relief area remains clean and sanitary throughout the convention. Therefore, sighted volunteers from local community groups should be recruited to stationed relief areas for two-hour shifts during peak times of use e.g. early morning, lunch time, early evening and later in the evening.
