Hi Pramit.
Yes, it worked! Thanks for your advice. It was very helpful.
I first tried using the cmd option, but I don’t have a program called MS-settings.
But I was able to do windows-s to search settings for tablet mode, and then I found the settings you were talking about.
My laptop was set to “use the mode appropriate to my hardware”, so I changed that to “use desktop mode when I sign in”. I also changed “hide apps on the taskbar in tablet mode” to Off. Then I restarted, and my desktop is back. Yay!
I guess this means I can’t use tablet mode, but I didn’t understand it well anyway. Now that I know where to find these settings, I may experiment a little.
Thanks again for your help.
Tracy

Thanks. This sounds like what I need. I did see tablet mode checked somewhere.
I’ll follow the steps you outlined, when I get off work today.

Hi Tracy,
First of all check if the Tablet mode has not been activated by mistake and follow the steps to disable it.
1. Hit the Windows key + R and this will open the Run dialog.
2. Type "cmd" and press Enter or click "OK" to open Command Prompt.
3. Type the "start ms-settings:" command and press Enter on your keyboard to execute it and to open Settings.
4. Select one that says "System"
5. Select "Tablet mode" on the left pane, and under "When I sing in", choose the "Use desktop mode" option.
You can also disable the "Hide app icons on the taskbar in tablet mode" and "Automatically hide the taskbar in tablet mode" options by toggling the switch to "Off" position. Restart the computer and see if this solves the missing desktop problem.
Or try this method
In case there are no icons on the desktop once your computer starts then follow the below options
1. Also you can use Shift + F10 once your system is On and
2. Then under View right arrow.
3. Scroll down and make sure "Show Desktop Icons" option is checked.
Hope this helps

Starting a few days ago, I can’t get to the desktop on my Windows 10 laptop. I Googled some instructions, but they didn’t work, either. They said to open File Explorer, and Poof, my desktop would be back, but it’s not. I tried checking it under the Quick Startup folder, but it wouldn’t let me check it, and I don’t know why.
Does anyone have any idea how I can get my desktop back?
Thanks.
Tracy
