How to Add Text Captions to iPhone Photos in iOS 14:  Rita's iDevice Advice
for November 2, 2020

 

Did you know that iOS 14 comes with a built-in feature that allows you to
add captions to photos on your iPhone? Users no longer have to seek an extra
app to add captions, and any captions added in the iPhone library will sync
to the cloud if iCloud Photo Library is enabled.  This means captions
created on your iPhone will be visible on all of your devices that have
access to the iCloud.  this will make searching iPhone photos using Siri and
the photo search bar much simpler and more accurate.

How to Add a Caption to an iPhone Photo in iOS 14:

Captions are handy for searching your iPhone photo library and for reminding
you of certain details when you come across the photo later.  For these
reasons, it's best to keep the captions simple but useful;  including notes
about a Holiday or occasion if applicable, and any other keywords you may
think of later when wanting to search for that photo.

How to caption pictures on the iPhone:

1.  Open the Photos app.

2.  Tap on a photo you'd like to add a caption to.

3.  When the photo opens, swipe up on the photo to reveal the Add a Caption
area.

4.  Tap on Add a Caption.

5.  Type in your caption using the keyboard that appears.

6.  When you're done adding a caption, tap Done to save it.

Go to photos and select a photo by swiping to it or touching the photo.

Note: once a photo is selected, you can single-finger double tap anywhere on
the screen.

Note: Sometimes you will need to swipe once and other times 3 or 4 times to
get to the "Add a Caption" option.

There are a few Ways you can get a photo described to you right in the Apple
photos app. For one thing, as you are swiping through your photos, you can
perform a three finger single tap on the photo to hear a description, also
often read automatically, of what is in the photo. You might hear things
like, table, chair, two people. This is just an example. When doing this,
make sure that your screen curtain is off, and that the brightness is not
set to zero. next, while you can of course listen to videos that you may
have taken, you can also do this with Live Photos. If you have the live
photo setting turned on in the camera, Open a live photo, then double tap
and hold where it says live photo. You will hear a couple seconds of audio.
This, combined with the description voiceover gives you, can often be enough
to determine much about the photo. Beyond this, if you have some cited help,
you can name the people in your various photos, so that going forward,
voiceover will tell you who is in every photo you have. You can also search
for photos based upon topics, events, people, dates, and locations. Finally,
if you are certain of what a particular photo is, you can use the two finger
double tap and hold on any photo, to open the voiceover label element
feature. Then you can provide a descriptive label for each of your photos.

To Share a photo or several photos:  Open the Photos app on your Apple iOS
device.   Select the Albums tab, then choose the album that you want.  Now,
at the top of the screen is a Select button. Double tap this, then double
tap each photo or video you wish to select.  The Share button should be at
the bottom of the screen.

After you choose Share, VoiceOver will announce the number of photos
selected.  If you swipe up and down immediately with one finger, you will
find an Options Button. Double tap this, and you will be able to change
various sharing options, such as whether to include the location in the
photos, whether to send individual photos or send them as an iCloud link,
and more.
