[NJTechDiv] has something changed with the iphone?

Hi list very early on in my Iphone experience, I learned a little trick that I tried today and failed.  On out of sight on the I discussion group I learned how to send messages with special effects fireworks, balloons and other things.  Supposedly you didn't just tap, you tapped and held and a sound came on and you then saw the send with effects choices.  Tried twice but nothing happened.  My phone actually got stuck on the send button the second time.  Did I forget a step or has something changed with IOS.  Wanted to send two birthday messages, one to my neice chrystal and one to a classmate with fireworks.  Did I forget to maybe swipe or something?
