I purchased it specifically because of the smaller size. I personally found the plus was a little to big for me, feeling awkward to handle and found myself constantly worrying about dropping it. There isn’t too much difference between the SE and eight. Yes it may be a little faster. But other than that I don’t think there’s anything else. I wish it had the UWB chip for the air tags. I’m actually been using the iPhone SE because it is a great alternative then spending $1000 for an iPhone 12. One last thing I should mention, you said you had a plus model so your phone is actually bigger than the SE.
