Hi all,

Below is an email I received from Margaret Leicester from the Associated Studetns for Empowerment at UNM. We have participated in DAD each semester for the last few years. I am writing to find out who is willing and able to make the day and help educate sighted people in our community/hand out NFB literature. It is a wonderful time to meet some people in our community and help them learn what blindness is not and how to use a cane under blindfold.

Thanks,

Tara

PS. Please let me know if you can g. This will also be announced at our monthly meeting.

ATTACHED AND BELOW IS INVITATION LETTER TO THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS FOR EMPOWERMENT DISABILITY AWARENESS DAY AND DIVERSITY SHOWCASE WEEK!

“One does not OVERCOME one's dis-ability, any more than one overcomes their race, gender or gender orientation...”- Emma Rosenthal

Dear Friends,

The Associated Students for Empowerment (ASE), University of New Mexico’s disability student organization, is planning its spring “Disability Awareness Day” on Friday, March 25, 2011, from 10 am to 2 pm, outside on the SUB North Upper Plaza, UNM campus. All UNM student organizations and community groups from Albuquerque are invited to participate.

This year, during the week of March 21-25, ASE will collaborate with the Office of Equity and Inclusion and many other UNM departments and student organizations, celebrating Diversity Showcase Week. Participating groups include: the Accessibility Resource Center (ARC), the African American and the American Indian Student Services, El Centro de la Raza, the LGBT Resource Center and more. During this week, there will be several films, panel discussions and other activities reflecting UNM’s diverse student population.

On Friday, March 25th, ASE will focus on raising the campus community’s awareness—students, faculty, and staff alike—around accessibility, transportation and other issues facing the disabled populace. The day also aims to educate students with disabilities about available resources at UNM, as well as in the broader Albuquerque community.

There will be an obstacle course for blindfolded people, “wheel chair challenge courses” (students and staff members ride in a wheelchair around campus), and a wheel chair basketball challenge with the Kings Wheel Chair Basketball Team. These events will be fun, as well as give people a sense of what it is like to be physically challenged.

We will also highlight and celebrate the achievements of disabled students at UNM.

We invite your group’s participation through sponsorship and/or providing your group’s service information at a table on the plaza addressing disability needs on campus and in the community.

For more information, please call and leave a message at 246-2231, to receive more information and to let us know you would like to participate.

Sincerely,
Ian Christmas, President
Guida Leicester, Vice President
China Holley, Secretary
Randy Holley, Treasurer
