New Mexico Association of Blind Students Minutes for September, 2011

 

Meeting called to order at 7:02 pm.

Treasurer's Report

 

A deposit of $246.00 was made into the account.

The balance as of September 18, 2011 is $1,278.35.

Some of the money included in the deposit was from our previous benefit
night.

David motioned, Amanda seconded, motion passed.

 

No fundraising has occurred except for previous benefit nights.

Amanda will give an update on Village Inn for a benefit night.

An Applebee's benefit night is being considered for either the end of
October, or the beginning of November. The week of November 7 will be
considered for a benefit night.

 

A plan to have a seminar during the month of December is being considered.

Possible dates for the seminar, the week of the sixteenth and the
seventeenth, will be looked at.

Possible locations would be the Commission for the Blind or the Preschool
for the Blind.

A deadline for registration for the seminar is set for Monday, November 21.

One idea is having local students speak about what it means to be blind.

The art academy will be held on Saturday, September 21 at the Preschool.

Meet the blind month is full of activities and different events.

The white cane banquet will be held at Sunset grille and Bar.

It will be held from 3:00 PM until 5:30 PM.

The banquet will be on Saturday, October 15.

Deadline for preregistration is Wednesday, October 5.

There will be a white cane essay contest for adults this year.

The topic for the essay is "the funniest or most unusual thing that happened
to you on a mobility lesson."

The deadline for the adult essay contest is Wednesday, October 5.

As a fundraiser for the chapters, there will be a fifty-fifty raffle
drawing.

The address for the Sunset grille and Bar is 6825 Lomas Ne.

On October 1, there will be a fundraiser dinner at Christine Hall's home
from 3:00 pm until 5:00 PM. A donation of any amount will be used to buy
your meal.

Christine's address is 10315 Propps Dr. Ne.

Rsvp's can be made to ShaRon Dandy or Christine Hall.

An event for reading to students at the local libraries is being arranged by
Tara Chavez and other local chapters of the NFB.

The state fair parade was a success.

The chapter was written about in the Albuquerque Journal.

Braille readers are leaders starts on November 1, and ends on January 4.

Around the same time, the start for applying for national scholarships will
begin.

The presidential release mostly talked about the Braille readers are Leaders
contest.

It also discussed the book called Thunder Dog which is about Michael Hingson
who survived the attacks on the World trade Center.

Michael made a motion to adjourn the meeting.

Lindsay seconded.
