[nobe-l] Hello and question

no disrespect to the aloha spirit but i've chatted with teachers who say
school discipline and violence are worse there than here; hope it's not
true.
but, if i'm getting off topic, let me just mention the issue this discussion
has caused me to think about. often times a blind person will take a job
offer, even if better instincts suggest it's not appropriate; often due to
worry that no other job will be offered, or that, once having turned
something down, that refusal will somehow follow throughout the a
professional life. In the current job market, people change jobs often,
always seeking something better in all respects. If a job offer feels wrong,
no matter the pressures to take it, I'd say no to it; the interview/hiring
procedure is a 2-way street, not a one-way street. by that i mean, the
schools need us just as much as we need them; they should be as worried
about meeting our expectations (perhaps more) as we are of meeting theirs.
i have no doubt whatsoever that there are far more talented and competent
blind teachers out there than I am; I just happened to be in the right place
at the right time; I have no illusions about this and don't for one second
think I'm better than any other teacher just because I've been fortunate
enough to be hired. I've definitely had my share of problems and wouldn't
think of painting this profession with pastels, just to reassure the
incoming generation of professionals. On the other hand, I think today's
new teachers are probably better equipped to deal with things than ever
before - technology, information, the ADA and all else conspire to make it
an opportune time.
thanks.

I also learned that teachers are bowed to and honored in the kingdom
of Hawaii. Or they were when Hawaii was a kingdom. Today, there are
Hawaiian schools where the teachers are respected more often. Just a
fun fact.
