[nobe-l] Question concerning TVI certification

Hi,
In regards to the question about becoming a certified teacher of
the blind, I would recommend looking into the TBS program at Louisiana
Tech University. This is a program rooted in NFB philosophy and which
works closely with the Louisiana Center for the Blind (one of the NFB
training centers). I graduated from this program in 2004 with a
Master's in Education with concentration in Teaching Blind students. I
also completed my O and M certification (NOMC) at the same time. Both
programs together took two years, though the TBS program is shorter-I
believe only one year if you do it alone. I was also there a little
longer b/c I attended the center for training while there. I would have
to say that this program certainly taught me a lot and was a
life-changing experience. I also know that in the past there have been
scholarship funds available. I'm not sure what the status of this is
now, but I'd recommend at least looking into this program. You can
contact Dr. Ruby Riles at the Professional Institute on Development and
Research on Blindness at Louisiana Tech University. The number is
318.257.4554.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

There are several online programs. Do you have a bachelors degree? I
have a masters degree so went for a certification from Pennsylvania
College of Optometry. It is now known as Sales University in
Philadelphia, PA. I took most classes online and attended some classes
during each summer. I worked full time so went to school full time. It
took me 5 semesters and three summers. Western Michigan and Ohio State
University also have online programs. There are probably several other
schools but I don't know about them.
