Job Title Blind/Visually Impaired Teacher
General Information
South Central Service Cooperative is accepting applications for a Teacher of the Blind/Visually Impaired for the 2010-2011 school year. The position is a regional position through the Region 9 Low Incidence Project.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications:
-A valid license to teach the Blind or Visually Impaired, issued by the Minnesota Department of Education.
Knowledge, skills and abilities
-Working knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to the education of students who are blind/visually impaired.
-Skills in reading, writing and teaching all forms of braille, e.g. literary, nemeth, slate and stylus.
-Training and/or experience in assistive technology unique to students with limited vision or blindness.
-Ability to work as part of a vision team.
-Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from various work sites.
The essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following fundamental duties:
-Conduct Vision Evaluations and develop and implement Individual Education Plans in accordance with due process, district practice and child study procedures.
-Provide direct and indirect educational services to students birth to 21 with a visual impairment in general and special education settings.
-Assist the school staff, students and family in developing and implementing an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) or an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to meet student's needs.
-Coordinate the various support and related services available to students who are blind/visually impaired (braillist, personal management specialist, vocational rehabilitation specialist, orientation and mobility teacher, etc.).
-Teach skills the student requires (braille, abacus, use of assistive technology, self-advocacy, etc.) to successfully complete their education.
-Collect information and texts necessary to order materials for students in formats including braille, large print and CD.
-Adapt materials and curriculum that are not available through other sources for the student.
-Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team for multiply impaired students.
-Maintain school-home communications.
-Keep records and complete required reports.
-Contributes to the District's inclusive workplace efforts by fostering a safe, welcoming and respectful environment.
-Perform other duties as assigned.
Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule
This is a 185 day position working 40 hours per week.
Salary and benefits will be determined.
