Hi:
I'm a blind TVI in western NY. I was a rehab teacher for the blind for 11
years and for 13 years as a TVI. I sometimes use the TypeAbility program
with Jaws with younger children to teach touch-typing skills. Its
excellent!!! My students love its funny jokes at the end of every lesson
and its positive reinforcement throughout the lesson. They also love the
quizzes on different academic topics that is offered with the full version
of the software. A free demo of the program is available on-line. IThe
teacher can also maintain a record of the student's progress. Check it out!
Its pretty funny! When you make an error in a lesson, it says pretty funny
phrases! It certainly grabs the attention of my students for sure!
Please don't hesitate to ask more questions about how to modify materials
for students you might be serving. We really need to share our ideas and
resources with each other.
Take care.
Karen

Hello,
I am a TVI working with students Middle and High School level. I am using
with a lot of success the software called Talking Typer for Windows. It is
simple and the students can work independently. My students look forward to
use the program; however, time could be an issue. Especially if your
students are highly academic. It is difficult, to find time during the
school day to do the lessons!
Let me know if you have any more questions,
Jordana

Hi! My name is Denise Millette and I am from Georgia. I am in my last
semester of my Master's program to become a TVI. I am doing my practicum
and would like to get some advice and ideas from those who have experience
in the field. I have a couple of students learning keyboarding skills.
They have a program that helps teach a couple of letters/keys at a time but
what techniques have any of you used to make sure they are utilizing the
correct finger positioning?
Any advice on good OCR software for paperwork?
I am also interested in any other good resources for visually impaired
teachers specifically those working with students with visual impairments.
Thanks in advance!
Denise
