Hi Denise:
I am a blind TVI. I tell my students that I will periodically check their
techniques by touching their fingers from time to time. I also give them
prelesson checks on a student's technique by asking him or her which finger
is used to strike various keys. I'll ask them which key the pointer strikes
on the home row, the row above the home row, or the keys below the home row
to the left or right. If the student is incorrect, he or she is then
corrected, if they are correct, he or she is praised. I hope this technique
is clear enough for you to understand.
I look forward to assisting you with additional questions about the field as
they arise.
Take care.
Karen

Hello Denise,
Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions. I use the following
technique to check that the students have their fingers on the correct keys
when typing. I stand behind them and reach my arms over the shoulders and
place my hands lightly on theirs. We play a game where I try to be as light
as a feather while they type. I usually do this in the beginning to reassure
myself that they can follow the directions and use correct fingering. I then
use it at the beginning of each lesson to ensure the correct orientation
and, gradually, depending on the age and competence of the student, reduce
the use of this technique once I'm satisfied that they are consistently
using correct fingering. I hope this is helpful.
Very warmest regards,
Heather Field

Hi! My name is Denise Millette and I am from Georgia. I am in my
last semester of my Master's program to become a TVI. I am doing my
practicum and would like to get some advice and ideas from those who
have experience in the field. I have a couple of students learning
keyboarding skills. They have a program that helps teach a couple of
letters/keys at a time but what techniques have any of you used to
make sure they are utilizing the correct finger positioning?
Any advice on good OCR software for paperwork?
I am also interested in any other good resources for visually impaired
teachers specifically those working with students with visual
impairments.
Thanks in advance!
Denise
