The DPI is currently seeking applicants for an Education Consultant-Orientation and Mobility position. This position is located at 1700 State Street in Janesville, WI.
Job Duties:   This position provides statewide leadership and consultative services to local educational agencies (LEAs), families, and other educational or private agencies regarding the development, evaluation, coordination, and improvement of DPI policies and services that support overall development for children who are blind or have low vision, with an emphasis on the expanded core curricular area of orientation and mobility. This position provides leadership in the development of LEA trans-disciplinary educational teams to assess and provide for the communication, curricular, and instructional needs of students with vision loss, with emphasis on ensuring that professionals are using effective teaching strategies that lead to inclusive home, school, and community involvement. This position requires a high level of collaboration with other members of the WCBVI Outreach Team and the Special Education Team. In addition, this leadership position provides support to the Outreach Director by participation in Special Education team meetings, creation and review of program materials policies, guidance documents, oversight of various initiatives, and will provide guidance regarding movement and orientation and mobility related issues for the Special Education Team.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:  services that support academic achievement, literacy, Expanded Core curriculum, and services that support home, school, and community inclusion through the expanded core curriculum, (most specifically the area of orientation and mobility), and social/emotional development for students with vision loss; developmental milestones and associated curricula for students with vision loss, specifically in the areas of concept development, spatiotemporal development, and orientation and mobility in addition to other areas of the expanded core curriculum; current an appropriate diagnostic orientation and mobility tools for use with students who have low vision, including those who may have additional disabilities and interpretation of those tools; current and appropriate orientation and mobility curriculum, instructional programs and materials for students who are visually impaired, with or without additional disabilities; range of orientation and mobility programming options including home, school and community environments for children with vision loss and the continuum of alternative placements identified in special education law; and federal and state regulations regarding special education services for students with visual impairments who require orientation and mobility evaluation and instruction with regard to FAPE assurances.

Ability to: provide orientation and mobility diagnostic evaluations; relate orientation and mobility diagnostic and assessment results to practical recommendations for educational programming and goal setting; modify curricula, expanded core curriculum and other strategies for enhancing instruction of orientation and mobility for students with vision loss; communicate effectively orally and in writing; and assess training needs and plan and/or implement training, presentations and workshops for school districts.
