Subject: [JBIR] Call for presentations:
Accessible instruction and participation in the
undergraduate science course for students

Announcement and Call for Presentations
2016 Biennial Conference on Chemical Education
Science/special education faculty and disability
services professionals, who have experience/ use
methods in teaching students who are blind or
visually impaired in the undergraduate
chemistry/science laboratory setting, may be
interested in participating in the following:

Symposium
Accessible instruction and participation in the
undergraduate science course for students with
vision impairment or loss Visual and spatial
representation of information, which is
significant and important in natural and physical
sciences, may not be readily accessible to all
learners in the classroom by conventional means;
that is for those who are blind or visually
impaired. None the less, approaches may be taken
to teaching that can be inclusive and address the
learning needs of a diverse audience. For these
differently-abled students, use of adaptations
and assistive technologies can provide them with
an authentic experience in the laboratory
component of the course. These means will help
create for the student the least restrictive
learning environment and thus enable them to
become independent workers. In this symposium,
practical and available ways and means to enhance
the learning experience of students who have
limited vision or vision loss will be explored and presented.
