Andrea,
It depends on what type of behavior that you are seeking to reinforce.
I praise thoughtful answers, compliant behavior, acts of courtesy and
kindness, etc.  If you're a sub, try to get to know the kids, as
quickly as possible.  If you can use their names, while giving
appropriate praise, it will give you a better connection with them.
Just give them respect, and expect respect in return from them.  Have
fun with the students!
