Hi everyone, Here is the information I have concerning student conference taking place in Nyack, NY. As I mentioned previously, the state affiliate is willing to pay the majority of the cost for participants from New York to attend, should NYABS take a role in planning the conference alongside people from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The details of the event are as follows: When: August 14-16, 2013 (coordinators also meet the 13th on-site) Cost: $50 down per person (participants and coordinators alike) The balance of the cost is projected to be covered by the state affiliates of the student divisions involved. Capacity: 35 students (including coordinators) It is projected that each state will provide 1-2 coordinators. Where: Stonypoint Center in Nyack, New York www.stonypointcenter.org (accessible by train and has direct buses from the Port Authority) What: (as described by Shafeka Hashash, who spearheaded the idea. Shafeka is the President of NJABS.) A  research opportunity and learning experience to advance knowledge on college campuses about rights of persons with disabilities, sheltered workshops, and injustices that occur in the work place.  We believe this will then extend into research on programs aimed at helping the disabled such as SSI and any other government assistance projects. Students will research how their campuses are linked to shelter workshop injustices.  For example, if I found NYU to be donating to Goodwill I would take a stand against it because I would not want my university donating to an unjust organization.  Students would also work to join social justice coalitions and bring things like the NFB Boycott Goodwill campaign to light to a broader supportive audience. Students will hear of other social justice issues pertaining to persons with disabilities that have been overcome and those that continue to be battled.  We hope this seminar will inspire students to get involved on campus, create outreach networks, and push future leaders to actively pursue social justice and equality for persons with disabilities as a part of their lives.  Best, Kathryn Carroll President, New York Association of Blind Students
