If you've ever visited the iTunes App Store, the first thing you'll notice
is the staggering amount of choices. There are more than 500,000 apps
available for everything from navigating your local neighborhood to
organizing your calendar. If you've been thinking about jumping into the
world of mobile phone apps, but aren't sure where to start, Braille
Institute's newest app, ViA (Visually Impaired Apps), is the tool for you.
Designed to take full advantage of the industry leading accessible features
available on the iPhone and iPad, our FREE ViA app is a resource for
beginning technology users who want to explore the wonderful world of
mobile apps.

ViA is a powerful aggregator that sorts apps by category, price and iTunes
App Store ratings to help visually impaired users easily find a
cross-section of useful apps. Whether you have low vision or no vision, ViA
has something for everyone. The current categories include Accessibility,
Entertainment, Health, K-12 Education, Navigation, News, Productivity,
Reading, Magnification and Social Networking. ViA also provides users with
a forum to suggest and discuss apps they find useful, and gives them the
power to track new apps that fall into categories that interest them,
creating an interactive community of visually impaired app users.

The apps that appear in ViA have been suggested by Braille Institute's
mobile app development team, which consists of access technology
specialists, visually impaired users and our partner organizations across
the country in the fields of education, health and advocacy for people with
low vision. ViA aims to provide blind and visually impaired smartphone
users with a tool to explore the possibilities of using mobile apps to
increase productivity and independence. We are proud to introduce ViA, your
guide to the world of mobile apps. We welcome your feedback. If you would
like to suggest an app to add to our ViA database, please email us at
appthinktank at brailleinstitute.org.
