Lighthouse International is now accepting applications for the 2013 Syde Hurdus President's Award. The deadline to apply is April 26, 2013. About the Award This award is given in memory of Ms. Hurdus’s dedication to the Lighthouse, and honors her commitment to preparing young people with vision loss for promising lives rich in achievement. This $10,000 award is given to a person who has completed a Lighthouse youth program and successfully overcome their vision loss by pursuing higher education, vocational training or achieving gainful employment. Applicant Criteria ·         Applicant must be legally blind (i.e., have a best corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or less in the better eye, and/or a visual field of less than 20 degrees in the better eye). ·         Scholarships are based on academic and personal achievements. Therefore, candidates are not required to demonstrate financial need. ·         Applicant must have graduated from one of the following Lighthouse Youth Programs: Saturday Youth Transition Program, Saturday Youth Skills Program, Summer Columbia Program, Summer Special Needs Program, or the Summer Youth Employment Program. ·         Applicant must be a graduating high school senior, undergraduate student, graduate student, vocational student or gainfully employed. ·         Previous Syde Hurdus Award recipients and current Lighthouse employees and members of their immediate families are ineligible. ·         Applicants must complete the online scholarship application and submit the required documentation, including two letters of recommendation.
