Feel a 3D Model: Hands-On with a Tactile Display
What's happening
Come try a new way of exploring 3D models by touch. We'll have a Dot Pad refreshable tactile display set up, along with a tool called CadA11y that shows a 3D object one cross-section at a time. You move a slice deeper or shallower through the object, or turn it to slice from a different direction, and build up a picture of its shape as you go.

We'll also have 3D-printed versions of some of the objects on hand, so you can feel the real thing and compare it to what you understood from the display.
What to expect
An informal, hands-on evening. We'll start with a short introduction to the display and how the controls work, then hand it over so people can explore for themselves. Expect questions, conversation, and a fair amount of trading the display back and forth.

Come for a few minutes or stay the whole time. There's nothing to prepare and nothing you need to bring.
Who it's for
Anyone who's curious. No experience with CAD, 3D modeling, 3D printing, or tactile displays is needed, and Braille is not required.
We'll be joined by
Carlos Tejada, a researcher at the University of Washington working on nonvisual access to 3D design tools, with Jen Mankoff (University of Washington). The tool is still early and unreleased, and honest reactions are genuinely the most useful thing anyone can offer.
