Twenty-one disabled women activists from Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East have arrived to the U.S. for our 7th international Women's Institute on Leadership and Disability (WILD) Exchange Program being held this month in Eugene, Oregon.<br>
<br>Embracing the "Loud, Proud, and Passionate ®" theme, WILD women are participating in intensive seminars, workshops and site visits, team building activities such as an outdoor challenge course and river rafting, and staying with local families. These activists, representing diverse disabilities, bring expertise in fields such as law, policy, business, human rights, youth empowerment, education, health, media, HIV/AIDS, and violence prevention.<br>
<br>During WILD we also host the Gender, Disability and Development Institute (GDDI) where delegates meet with representatives from international development agencies later this month. This innovative retreat goes beyond rhetoric and workshops to engage participants in direct dialogue about strategies for including women and girls with disabilities in development projects throughout the world.<br>

The WILD program is made possible by the generous support of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), with technical support provided by the USAID-funded Leadership, Management, and Governance project. Coming together as disability advocates from many different countries is what MIUSA is all about. And recently, we had a chance to host leaders from 11 countries including Botswana, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Niger, Senegal, South Africa, South Sudan, and Swaziland for one day as part of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). In just three years, MIUSA alumni Peter Flomo from Liberia went from YES Scholar to starting the Vision of Life Club of Disabled Youth, returning to study in the U.S., and now husband and father of two small boys. "As a blind person in Liberia, the opportunities for education and a good life are nonexistent at this time. In order to live, a disabled person must get on the streets to beg for money for food and other necessities. This club works with other disabled associations to teach members how to be a more productive people in their homes and communities," shared Peter. "This initiative came from the things I learned as an exchange student and as part of the MIUSA program." Have a story to share? Become a featured person and share your update!<br>

We can't wait to meet them! The next generation of youth leaders with disabilities is making their way to MIUSA this week. High school students with disabilities from Eurasia and predominately Muslim countries will be studying abroad at high schools throughout the United States. After 5 days of disability rights workshops, volunteer projects, adaptive sports, and leadership training with us, these young leaders with disabilities leave knowing how to address the challenges related to accessibility and inclusion during their school year.
