Training Seeing Eye Dogs to Navigate the Subway
By Cristina Romano; Eyewitness News
NEW YORK (WABC) -- It takes a lot of stamina to navigate New York, both above and below, but what would it be like if you couldn't see? Walt Sutton has asked himself that question every day for the past 25 years. He brings the seeing eye dogs that he trains underground so they learn how to navigate the subway.

"It's incredible&I mean the way these dogs think and react," Sutton said.

Throughout his career, Sutton has trained nearly 300-400 dogs, but more importantly, he has made many lives better.

"I have a student who I've trained a couple times - huge, huge New York Yankees fan, and she wanted to learn how to get from her home in Morris Plains, New Jersey by herself with her seeing eye dog...it's a madhouse, and the dog fights through that. It's amazing," said Sutton.

Being underground makes Sutton think, "What if I couldn't see.... would I have the confidence and the daring to do that?"

When all the people go hurrying along - head down or looking straight ahead Walt Sutton has found a way to see something wondrous.
