> 11/4/2013, 6:20 PM (ET)The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced new rules requiring airline websites and automated airport kiosks to be accessible to passengers with disabilities within two years. The rules also require travel sellers to disclose and offer web-based discount fares to customers who are unable to use their sites due to a disability; that requirement takes effect 180 days later. The rules are part of DOT’s implementation of the 1986 Air Carrier Access Act.
>
> The DOT also fined US Airways $1.2 million for failing to provide adequate wheelchair assistance to passengers. The fine is one of the largest ever levied by the DOT in a disability case. Under DOT rules, carriers are required to provide free, prompt wheelchair assistance upon request by disabled customers. The DOT examined about 300 passenger complaints during 2011 and 2012 involving disabled passengers at Philadelphia International and Charlotte Douglas International Airports
