No by law they cannot charge for any service animal, Via the Department of Justice an the ADA.
They are getting a little strict through with service animals, the dogs have to be recognized service animals with disabilities other than comfort animals, and also only animals recognized by the DOJ and ADA are dogs and guide horses.
Make sure when you are writing in reference to guide dog that you copy the NAGDU list as well.
Bibi, Travel & Tourism and NAGDU are working on these issues with the airlines as we speak, we are coming together to work on a resolution and other issues in the future. Please stayed tuned, if you are not a paid member of travel & tourism or anyone else on this list, we welcome you to join and to help out with these issues. To many things with the airlines have gone 2 steps forward and 5 steps back, these are serious issues.
Remember it is only $10 a year to join the division.
To join go to our www.nfbtravel.org website under the home page tab and it will tell you how to join.
For the meantime, until we find a new treasurer all payments by check will be going to Cheryl Echevarria, President, NFB Travel & Tourism, 10 Aljan Drive, Brentwood, NY 11717

> Subject: [Travelandtourism] airline service dog fees
>
> Hi, all,
> I am curious if airlines are once again trying to charge those who utilize service dogs as their independence of travel?
> I ran into a passenger on a bus route last month or probably a few weeks ago who was telling me the airline he was going to fly with said he'd have to pay an extra $50.00 for his seizure alert dog to fly in the cabin and since the dog is very small, it would need to be sitting on his lap.
> I'm uncertain if I would go that route of having a small dog upon my lap, given the times I've flown, the airplanes have hit rough tirbulents.
> My concern would be that if it were to happen, the small dog could possibly end up with injuries.
> I'm sure it can happen to a large dog like Odie too.
> Odie and I did fly a couple of times together and my other two guide dogs went with me on the airplane.
> The most important part I did on my end was to make sure my dog was underneath the seat lying comfortably along the wall of the aircraft cabin.
> So, if the service dog fee is back into the question again, which airline is trying to do this and ones that are not?
> Bibi and son Odie
