Hi Vince,

My name is Kaiti Shelton and I am the secretary of OABS. I will be a
sophomore at the University of Dayton this year, and although I am not
familiar with your campus I do have a few ideas that might be useful for you
to try to learn it.

Are you set up with Voc Rehab services? If so you can get an orientation
and mobility specialist to work with you on the campus and show you all you
need to know. When I was just starting and UD was brand new to me my O&M
instructor showed me everything from navigating through my academic
buildings to getting around my dorm and labeled things like my mailbox and
the laundry machines so they were accessible. I still meet with him each
semester to run through my schedule and learn where new classrooms are. Voc
Rehab services are also helpful in other things, even tuition assistance.

If you are not able to get instruction from an O&M instructor, would it be
possible to get a good friend or relative to take you through the parts of
the campus you need to use on a regular basis? I was able to get extra
drilling from my mom in the beginning; we would just stay after tours or
meetings with disability services and practice walking around campus and
having me identify which buildings were around me, or practicing routes from
one point to another. It really helped me to learn where things were and
feel confident by the first day. If your college offers free tours there is
no shame in taking them multiple times to learn where things are. Feel free
to ask your tour guide for information or if they can point out any distinct
landmarks that can help you. My university even offered to have a private
tour for me so that the guide could point out specific points of interest,
so if that is an option it might also be something to consider. I would
also suggest talking to disability services, as they may know of someone who
would be willing to do this with you.

If you know someone who is good at making tactile maps one of those might
help, especially just as you're getting acquainted with the campus. They
can be great for planning routes or looking for the best way to go across
campus, etc.

I think Chenelle Hancock went to Tri C, but I'm not sure if it was the East
campus and she has been out of school for a while. You might want to ask
her if she has some input on this though if you know her.

Additionally, if you are interested in joining the Ohio Student division we
have an upcoming meeting next Friday at 7:00 PM. I will send out the call
information over this list a few days before that call. So far we have
planned to take care of some division business and have Eric Duffy scope out
what we as students want to get out of convention, but I'm sure we would be
happy to answer any questions you might have or work through some concerns
as well. The officers of OABS would also be willing to talk on an
individual basis if you would like to do that as well.

If I think of any more helpful suggestions I will post them here.

Hello,

My name is Vince, I am blind, and I am going to Tri C Eastern campus
for the first time. I was just wondering if there are any other students
that are blind that may be on this list that go to Tri C Eastern. I would
like to get in contact with you. This will be the first time I am going
back to college since I lost my vision, but I am a Braille reader, but I am
new to the area, and Cleveland in general. I been to the Cleveland Chapter,
but have found it hard to get an idea what's going on in that chapter since
the meetings are so fast.

Thanks,
Vince
