An Arrogant Assumption
It’s easy to get in the bad habit of putting off doing things that you are just not that thrilled about doing. You might not be excited about weeding the garden, organizing your tax files, or cleaning out the garage. But when you wait until the last minute to accomplish the dreaded task, it creates urgency and stress that could have been avoided. Because you waited, you now experience needless panic to meet your deadline. Not only is your adrenaline rushing and your blood pressure rising, but those around you often suffer from your anxiety as well. Snapping at those you care about and racing through the job causes hard feelings and affects the quality of your work. All could have been avoided if you had just tackled the task right away instead of delaying the inevitable. When you think about it, procrastination is the arrogant assumption that God owes you another opportunity to do what you had plenty of time to do. The Bible has quite a bit to say about procrastination. In Proverbs 18:9, we’re told, “Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys.” And Proverbs 13:4 says, “The soul of a lazy man desires, and has nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.”  Sadly, many people procrastinate when it comes to spending time with God. They make excuses for why they don’t go to church, read their Bible, or have daily devotions. But if you limit your time in God’s presence, you will become distant from Him, and it won’t be long before you drift so far away that you no longer have an interest in spiritual things at all. God needs to be number one in your life here on earth if you are planning on spending eternity with Him. So, don’t skimp on communicating with God. Prayer is the answer to every problem in life. And don’t avoid reading God’s Holy Word. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” There’s a reason that God wants you to open His Word so that you have clarity, understanding, and direction of how to live your life so that you are prepared for heaven. Without the Bible for your guidebook, you would be blindly trying to stumble along. You can’t trust your heart, your emotions, or your own wisdom to see God’s big picture. God has all the answers and He knows what’s best–so don’t delay or procrastinate any longer– start spending time with Him today!
