Returning to Normal
Living through a pandemic has people around the world wondering if life will ever return to “normal.” Will things ever be the same? There is so much anxiety and stress worrying about what will happen next. There’s no doubt that this virus, COVID-19, turned the world upside down and created a global atmosphere of fear and panic. The truth is, there is only one certainty in life . . . and that is change. Things may never go back to how they used to be, but before trying to find your “new normal,” take the time to evaluate your life and consider which parts of your old life are worth rushing back to. One thing for sure is that the pandemic forced everyone to slow down. Families that rarely saw each other were confined to the same space for months. There were some positive things that came out of that as spouses rediscovered love and the family unit was made stronger. But there were also negatives for those who couldn’t cope with the isolation. Many suffered discouragement or depression and some even committed suicide. Many couples discovered that they not only didn’t “love” each other, but they didn’t “like” each other very much either and ended their relationships. For abused women it was an absolute nightmare because they were forced in isolation with their abuser, and the abuse only escalated over time. Children suffered as well. Popular singer Celine Dion said, “Life imposes things on you that you can’t control, but you still have the choice of how you’re going to live through it.” You can choose to live in fear, or you can choose to put your faith and trust in God. The Bible says in Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” God does not want His children to be afraid. In fact, the words “fear not,” or “don’t be afraid” are the most repeated commands in the Bible. How awesome that God has given this assurance that you don’t have to be afraid or worry about anything! He’s got you! Jesus is coming soon and we know there will be some pretty tough times ahead. We are told in Matthew 24:6-13, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” Christians have read the end of the book. They know God wins the battle between good and evil. Don’t worry about returning to “normal”–all you need to do is put your faith and trust in God and your salvation will be sure.
