Why Do We Fail To Finish?

The goal is always to finish. You've heard it said before, "finish what you start".

A short message from Dr. Jeffrey Smale

28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? 29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, 30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

Luke 14:28-30

The man in our text was desiring to build a tower. Three times we are told in the verses that the goal of this man was to "finish it".

The goal is always to finish.  You've heard it said before, "finish what you start".

Every good and worthwhile thing requires a finish to it.

There is great excitement in starting, but a lot of work in finishing.

Eccl. 7:8 states, "Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof"

Anyone and everyone can start; but it takes character, integrity, faithfulness, and work to finish.

Let me share with you 4 reasons why we fail to finish.

1.) No Purpose to Finish (He was intending to finish but not purposing to finish)

They have no reason to finish. Remind yourself as to why you started in the first place (Calling/ Commission/ Concern)

2.) No Plan to Finish ( vs. 28 "Counteth the cost")

You must set goals in order to finish J.C. Penney said, "Show me a stock clerk with a goal and I will show you someone who will change the world.  Show me a man without a goal and I will show you a stock clerk."

3.) No Preparation to Finish  (vs. 29 "After he had laid the foundation")

What have you done to prepare your finish? Dr. Jack Hyles said, "Greatness is not in the performance; greatness is in the preparation" I have learned that "Preparation is the key to success in any venture"

4.) No Push to Finish (vs. 28 "Sufficient to finish")

See the need for you to finish/ motivate yourself. Spend your time around those who motivate you to finish. Somebody/ somewhere needs you to finish!

I have seen approx.35,000 people come to Christ under my preaching during 35 years of ministry. (not sure how many more were saved through my personal soul-winning efforts).

How many would have been saved had I quit?

The best illustration of this is the finish of Sunday School teacher Edward Kimball.  Kimball garnered the courage to witness to one of his students by the name of DL. Moody.

Moody was saved and was known for seeing 1 million souls come to salvation through his ministry. What would have been the story had Edward Kimball not finished?

You need/ must finish.

Someone, and perhaps dozens to thousands are counting on you to finish!
