An Amazing Fact: Though the Winchester Mystery House is one of the most popular mansions in California, the Victorian home completely lacks a master building plan.

Sarah Winchester just had to move from Connecticut. According to a medium that she consulted after her husband’s death, the supposed spirits of all the dead people killed by guns manufactured by her husband’s famous company would haunt her unless she kept building a house. People say her deceased husband also communicated that she would not die if she continued construction on a home. So, in 1884, she moved west to San Jose and hired carpenters to begin working day and night.

In order to “confuse the spirits” and prevent them from settling into the home (which supposedly happened anyway since it was apparently “haunted”), Sarah built many strange features into her mansion. You can find doors that lead nowhere and windows that look into other parts of the house. Sarah inherited $20.5 million when her husband passed away. Besides that, her income from part ownership in the Winchester Repeating Arms Company gave her about $1,000 a day (about $30,000 a day in today’s value). Though she kept her workers busy building 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for 36 years, Sarah died on September 5, 1922. The next day all construction ceased.

On the other hand, one of the most beautiful homes built in Bible times had a perfect plan. God’s sanctuary design was originally communicated to Moses. Later, when David intended to construct a permanent location for the Lord’s house, his son, King Solomon, erected the “First Temple” in Jerusalem. It was so carefully crafted that materials were prepared offsite and then brought to the location and reverently placed.

Jesus promised that He would build heavenly mansions for each of us, but the preparation that we need to make before receiving those homes is to receive Christ into our hearts. In other words, God’s temple would be built within us and we would house the Holy Spirit. Paul writes, “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19).

In Hebrew, seven is shevah, which comes from the root word savah, meaning to be full or satisfied. Because it means full and satisfied, it is, therefore, the number of spiritual perfection. God’s wisdom helps us build the perfect home. Solomon is telling us that wisdom has made a house without flaw. The Bible is our blueprint. When we take the knowledge of the Scriptures into our minds, we will live forever.
