Haman hated Mordecai, the Jew and ordered the construction of a gallows for
Mordecai’s destruction. Meanwhile, the king—King Xerxes—couldn’t sleep, and
he requested a reading of the book of records. It reminded him that
Mordecai had once saved his life by reporting an assassination plot. Early
the next morning, the king asked Haman, “What should be done for the man
the king delights to honor” (Esther 6:6)? Haman assumed the king was
talking about him and made some suggestions. “‘Go at once,’ the king
commanded. ‘Get the robe and the horse and do just as you have suggested
for Mordecai the Jew.” (Esther 6:10). Haman planned to lead Mordecai to the
gallows. Instead, he led him through the streets. Who could have envisioned
such a hairpin U-turn? God could!
