Shut Your Mouth
People who are quick to criticize and judge others are quite often miserable themselves. In order to make themselves feel better, they tear down someone else. But judging is a sin. James 4:11-13 tells us, “Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?” The sad truth is, rarely can you find a person who is not critical of others. It is a human weakness that we all struggle with. However, we shouldn’t even think judgmental thoughts. If we are truly walking with Jesus, we won’t want to speak or think evil of anyone, or damage anyone’s reputation, even if what we have to say is the truth. The Bible gives excellent advice on what to do if you see your brother sinning. In Galatians 6:1-2, we’re told, “If another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.” Judging others is easy because it distracts us from the responsibility of judging ourselves. That’s why God tells us in Matthew 7:5, “You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” When you’re tempted to criticize, pray for Holy Spirit strength to shut your mouth tight before saying anything negative about anyone. You’ll not only be pleasing God, but you’ll feel better too! Text: Romans 2:1-3, Matthew 12:36-37, John 7:24, Proverbs 16:28
Bible Texts:
Romans 2:1-3 NKJV - Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?
Matthew 12:36-37 NKJV - "But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. "For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."
John 7:24 NKJV - "Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment."
Proverbs 16:28 NKJV - A perverse man sows strife, And a whisperer separates the best of friends.
