Never Argue Religion
Sharing your faith because you want to witness and quarreling about theology are two very different things. It is never a good idea to “argue” religion. The Bible is very clear about the danger of arguing. In 2 Timothy 2:23 we’re told, “Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.” Sometimes believers have no tact and approach nonbelievers with an attitude of “I know what’s right and you don’t.” Coming from that perspective is not only offensive but it is arrogant and pushy, which, as you can imagine, drives people away from God! Christians complain of being persecuted for Christ’s sake, but this kind of witnessing actually sets yourself up to be persecuted for being obnoxious! There’s an old saying that goes like this: “A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.” In other words, you won’t win someone to Jesus with force! Share your faith with humility and meekness. Be gentle, kind, and Christlike both in your tone and actions. In 1 Peter 3:15 we’re told exactly how God wants us to witness: “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” If someone wants to “talk about God” but then becomes defensive, stop and say, “Let’s agree to disagree,” then walk away before it escalates into a heated discussion. The whole purpose of sharing your faith is not for winning an argument–but for winning a soul! TEXT: 2 Timothy 2:14-16, Titus 3:1-2, Romans 14:1, Colossians 4:6
Bible Texts:
2 Timothy 2:14-16 NKJV - Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.
Titus 3:1-2 NKJV - Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men.
Romans 14:1 NKJV - Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things.
Colossians 4:6 NKJV - Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
