Hello all.
I Wanted to share a wonderful experience I had with my mother today at St. Peter in Chains Basilica in Downtown Cincinnati, thanks to Lisa Averion from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and the NFB.
We had the opportunity to attend a special Mass and procession to celebrate Jesus and the Eucharist organized as part of a pilgrimage that has been passing through several parishes in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati over the past week, culminating in an event this morning at St. Peter in Chains Basilica.
The event consisted of Mass celebrated by Archbishop Dennis Schnurr followed by a procession of the Blessed Sacrament from the Basilica to Fountain Square in Downtown Cincinnati, which, ironically, is along the very same route that the Cincinnati Chapter has held celebrations of our Meet the Blind month and White Cane Awareness Day in the past.
Lisa took the time to ensure that I had access to Communion and provide all programs, hymns, and readings in Braille (provided by St. Xavier Society for the Blind in advance). It was the first time I had such access to Mass as a Blind Catholic, and it was very empowering and humbling.
I received a special invitation to this event from the Archdiocese as well as some members of the Deaf Community, who had ASL interpreters on hand. Lisa also mentioned that she could explore ways to provide access to some other spiritual programs at other parishes.
I would like to thank Lisa as well as my federation family for giving me the resources to advocate for improved access to the Mass and Liturgical activities. It was truly a wonderful and awe-inspiring event, and I hope our division can replicate our efforts in other faiths and denominations which members of our Federation community practice.
Very Best,
Chris
