Lorain Lions Club hosted the semi-annual Pancake Breakfast on Nov. 3 at the Italian American Veterans Post #1, 4567 Oberlin Ave., in Lorain, to help benefit local causes related to blindness and eyesight.

With the help of organization members and Amherst Leo Club members, guests were served a pancake and sausage breakfast with dine-in or carry-out options, and had the opportunity to purchase baked goods made by Lions Club members, 50/50 raffle tickets or entry to a lottery basket raffle.

“We just ask all the members to bake something,” said Tom Bruno, first vice president of Lorain Lions Club.

“It’s a little bit extra income, but also gives the people the option of a little dessert also.”

According to George George, first vice president and pancake breakfast coordinator, all proceeds raised at the event will be donated to benefit local causes including that of Asia Quinones-Evans, a Lorain resident who went completely blind in 2014, to help with expenses related to her service dog, Mr. Grey.

“We take pride in that because there’s not any other organization that gives 100% of the proceeds,” said George.

“We have certain charities that we designate for each pancake breakfast.”

For the next year, George said the organization will help with expenses related to Mr. Grey in regard to medical bills, food or other necessities.

Mr. Grey will turn 8 in December, and requires more care that comes with age regarding seeing the vet for medicine and treatments.

Quinones-Evans, who is set to join the Lorain Lions Club on Nov. 6, said the fundraising event means “more than you can imagine” to her, as she has struggled to find a job until recently, and has been faced with reduced hours in recent weeks while funding her own private transportation.

“It (the event) definitely means the world to me,” she said.

As a student at LCCC, Quinones-Evans is responsible for the cost to and from classes with the private driver, as well as any other places she needs or wants to go, like the grocery store, doctor appointments, vet appointments or more.

“Not every blind person has that ability, but it has definitely worked out very good for me,” she said.

Proceeds from the event also help support Lions Conquering Blindness to help fund local area sight projects such as eye exams, eyeglasses, and surgical eye treatment, for community members with financial need, according to a press release.

Bruno said one reason guests, many who are regulars, are so eager to attend the pancake breakfasts is because they recognize the proceeds stay within the community to help local causes, not always necessarily related to eyesight.

While eyesight makes up the main philanthropy, Lions Club services the needs of individuals for many different reasons including pediatric cancer, hearing, diabetes, disaster relief, hunger and more.

“They know it’s coming up, they’ll call us and ask,” said Bruno.

“If there’s people in need, we try to help them,” George added.

This year’s pancake breakfast was sponsored by LorMet Federal Community Credit Union, an institution also dedicated to keeping the community at the center of their service, the release states.

“Since 1936, LorMet Credit Union has served the Lorain community, and we appreciate the impact the Lorain Lions Club has locally,” said Daniel Cwalina, president and CEO of LorMet.

“We are proud to sponsor this event and support their mission.”
