Subject: My Mother (Virginia Mann)
As some of you are aware, my mother almost died on Wednesday. Here is what
happened and is happening:
My mother has had a pretty bad staph infection on her leg for several
months, and last week she went to the doctor's and got a new prescription (a
very strong antibiotic). She has been getting weaker and out of breath for
the past few days and has collapsed a few times. Sunday 1/3, she went to
church and got a small scratch on her hand, it bled for 20 hours. By now
she was bleeding from several other cuts and on Tuesday she had my father
take her to the emergency room to level out her cumidin levels. However her
Potassium levels were very high (which is what was causing her to be so weak
and having difficulty in breathing), but she was in great spirits even
joking about coming home on Wednesday or Thursday.
Wednesday morning I received a phone call from the doctor telling us that
death was eminent. During the night her body had begun to bleed internally
and they weren't sure how much damage was in her head, or in her belly
(bowels were dead ect...) When I got to the hospital she was in ICU, she
had no idea who I was. We called the family, at 10 o'clock it was only a
matter of time. They decided to do a dialysis session on her again, despite
the fact that she was restless and unhappy but 4 she was calmer and in
stable but critical, death was no longer eminent, it was now just a matter
of time. By 6 they told us to go home, and they would call us if she got
worse.
Thursday morning, I received a phone call from my mother asking what had
happened yesterday, and I when I got there I explained what happened. She
was shocked, barely remembering any of it. She has full mental faculties,
and is calm and back to her old self. She is still bleeding internally, she
has an ulcer and several pin-hole ulcers in her stomach and today they are
doing a colonoscopy to see if she is bleeding anywhere else. She has had a
lot of blood and plasma and is in high spirits. Every doctor that came in
yesterday (about 8 of them) all said that they were surprised and please
that she was still alive. We all praised the Great Physician. One doctor
even gave a go home goal of 3 or 4 days. She is still in ICU and still
receiving blood, but is also still in great spirits! If you want I can keep
you informed as I know what is happening.
Thank you for your help,
Deb Mann
