Fellow Federationists:
The 2009 Washington Seminar will take place in less than three weeks! The
January 2009 Braille Monitor contains an article, Tips and Reminders for the
Washington Seminar, by Barbara Pierce, which contains important advice for
those who will be spending time meeting with representatives and senators.
Especially valuable to many will be her primer on the geography of Capitol
Hill. You can read this article at
http://www.nfb.org/images/nfb/Publications/bm/bm09/bm0901/bm090105.htm
The legislative agenda and fact sheets for this year's issues can be found
at
http://www.nfb.org/nfb/Washington_Seminar.asp
The issues this year are the following:
Issue 1: Enhancing Pedestrian Safety: Ensuring the Blind can Continue to
Travel Safely and Independently
Issue 2: A Technology Bill of Rights for the Blind
Issue 3: Removing the Earnings Penalty: A Common Sense Work Incentive for
Blind Social Security Beneficiaries
We have worked on the first and third issues before, with the Pedestrian
Safety issue being the reintroduction of our bill from the last Congress.
Those of you who are familiar with the Social Security issue, however, need
to take special note of the fact that we have changed our approach to
solving this problem. Issue 2 is a completely new issue.
Please share this information with your chapter members who are going to the
Washington Seminar.
